Introduction to Gut Health
If you’ve been reading about wellness lately, and even if you haven’t, it will be very apparent that the topic of gut health crops up A LOT right now, usually accompanied by very long list of what we should and shouldn’t be doing to keep tour digestive system healthy. But is this just a way to get us to buy more Kefir…with Mother (even if we knew what that was!), or is it a band-wagon worth jumping on?
The gut health ‘trend’ is very much backed up by science and so yes, it is a band-wagon worth hitching a ride with. In recent years, research has confirmed that what goes on in our digestive system has a far bigger impact on our health than we ever imagined. Indeed the state of our microbiome; bacteria and microorganisms in our gut, has been linked to aspects of our health that we previously thought had nothing to do with digestion, from immunity to our mental health and emotional stress to chronic illnesses, including cancer and Type 2 Diabetes. It may even affect our thoughts and food preferences!
Research on the microbiome is still in its early stages, but studies have already found that certain environments, foods and behaviours can have an impact on our gut health, both positively and negatively.
