Scar Therapy

Following injury or surgery scar tissue is formed to heal the wound. Normally this is the end of it and all is well again.

However sometimes scar tissue can create problems of its own, with adhesions and fibrosis causing a restriction of movement or feeling of numbness or hypersensitivity on or around the injury site. Adhesions can also cause pain in areas distant form the injury site, such as back pain following abdominal surgery.

Following research from around the world in the last decade, it has been found that scar tissue responds very well to gentle manual treatment, softening the tissues and allowing greater movement. Scar tissue release is one form of this type of intervention. Treatments take approximately 30- 45 minutes, are comfortable to receive, and patients generally feel the benefits quite quickly.

What types of scars can benefit from therapy?

  • Caesarians

  • Abdominoplasty

  • Appendix

  • Breast cancer

  • Surgical scars of all types including joint replacements, injury scars, and burns.

The only contraindications are areas where mesh has been used, and internal scars (I am not trained to go into orifices). Also in my experience keloids do not respond well.
